The LWML
(Lutheran Women's Missionary League) of Shepherd
of the Hills Lutheran Church invites all
communing women to join us. The LWML is the
official women's auxiliary of The Lutheran
Church - Missouri Synod. Since its founding in
1942, the LWML has focused on affirming each
woman's relationship with Christ, encouraging
and equipping women to live out their Christian
lives in active mission ministries and to
support global missions.
Each
biennium, a mission grant goal is set by the
voting assembly of the National LWML. The goal
is funded by supporters through monetary gifts
placed into LWML Mite Boxes as a thank offering
to God and with a prayer for our worldwide
missions. Contributions collected by local
societies, and at district events are sent to
the District Treasurer. The monies are divided
75% for District mission projects and 25% for
the International LWML mission projects. In its
first 65 years, over $85 million has been given
to support missions all over the world through
these Mite Box offerings.
Based on
the Biblical account of the widow's mite (Luke
21;1-4) the Mite Box is intended for regular
contributions of "mites" --- offerings above and
beyond the support given to the local
congregation and the LCMS. Mite Box
contributions amount to millions of dollars that
fund District and national mission grants as
well as to implement other LWML programs.
Shepherd
of the Hills Lutheran Church LWML meets
quarterly to conduct business. Devotions,
Bible study and prayer are a large part of our
group meeting. We often have a guest speaker
(usually someone associated with a specific
quarterly project). Afterwards, we share lunch
and fellowship - a time for getting to know each
other.
We hope
you will be led to join us for these occasions
and to get involved in our mission projects.
There
are three Circles which emphasize different
directions and offer a satisfying opportunity
for all women of the church to be involved. The
Rebekah Circle is our fund-raising group, which
sponsors various events during the year to raise
funds for LWML projects. The Lydia Sisters
meet weekly on Tuesday mornings to sew quilts
and items for Lutheran World Relief. The
Deborah Circle is an evening Bible Study group
which meets in different homes each month.
Even
with all the activities being addressed, we
still welcome any suggestions for new activities
which you may have been involved with in other
churches and which you feel would be good for
the SOTH LWML to consider. Please share your
experiences with us and become a part of our
growing mission group.
Sincerely,
Gail Moerdyk,
President
